Betty’s Soup Out This Week

Lots to talk about but first things first. My new album Betty’s Soup is currently streaming in full on my MySpace page. I would love to get your thoughts on the record.

Betty’s Soup comes out this Friday and I’m a little freaked out by it. The whole process started well over 18 months ago and now you all get to hear what I’ve been fussing over, that means I’m a mixture of nerves and excitement. However, you don’t have to wait till Friday to hear it. The album is available for pre-order right now and every purchase receives the digital version of the record straight away, so head over to the store page & get yours now.

Last week I ventured back into the recording studio to smash out a few bonus tracks. One of the songs is called Populous and the other is called Pretty Worn. These tracks are available to people who purchase either the Soup Lovers package or the All You Can Eat package. I like both songs and what’s really great is that I’ve well and truly caught the writing bug again… songs, songs, songs!

Jonesez is also in the studio playing PBS Live tomorrow night (Tuesday 3rd). Live to air at 7pm on Everybody Moves (Aus music show). Tune in to 106.7FM & listen. You can also listen online at www.pbsfm.org.au if you’re out of range. I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to play every song off Betty’s Soup if we don’t have to tune our guitars between every song.

Reviews are still coming in for Betty’s Soup and I promise i’m not just showing you the positive ones, it’s just that no ones ripped it to pieces yet (i’m sure that review is right around the corner). This is what the people at Bombshellzine had to say…

Like a showbag loaded with various treats is this album. 10 tracks, none of which sound alike. Is it pop? Is it rock? Is it grunge? Is it indie? well that all depends which track you listen to really. Such variety is a little bit daunting in the first few listens as you attempt to get some flow, but like any good tunes, the glue begins to stick and slowly but surely, all the pieces fit together and you are hooked. There’s a certain charm about the songs on this album, maybe it’s the DIY vibe that not just jumps out from the facts of the project, but also in the actual sound, while the production could be classed as pretty slick, it’s still very raw, nothing sounds forced or overly tinkered with. The variety of genres on offer also contributes to the charm, as if to say “well i’m not out to impress anyone, i’m just gonna do what i want to”. The opener ‘Sheep Stations’ will have you thinking that the album’s sound is a little grungey / experimental in nature, but then ‘Be That Guy’ and all it’s hooks come along and flow into ‘Fancy’. It’s about this stage you give up trying to find a pigeonhole, or guessing what’s to come. ‘Best Friend’ is a perfect example of the old saying that the simple things in life are often the best. There really isn’t much to this track, but it stands as one of the most memorable ones on the album. ‘Still Got My Brains’ is another highlight, catchy pop that get’s the foot tapping and head nodding. ‘Drats’ would be the album highlight to my ears, one of the tracks that needed a bit of time to really get into, but after a few spins I was sold. May not be the catchiest track on the album, but it’s definitely a standout. It’s followed by another highlight in ‘Longlegs’, a little quirky, but builds into a pretty cool track with a memorable chorus. Overall it’s an album that has a little bit of everything, is a little hard to describe, needs a few spins to grow, but is oozing with charm, hooks and is definitely unique. Unlike a treat filled showbag, there’s no upset tummy at the end of it either.
